Date circular:

Chemical name: Benzenamine, N-(1-ethylpropyl)-3,4-dimethyl-2,6-dinitro-

Final regulatory action has been taken for the category: Pesticide

Final regulatory action: The chemical is Banned

Use or uses prohibited by the final regulatory action:

All applications

Pesticide use or uses that remain allowed:

The final regulatory action was based on a risk or hazard evaluation: Yes

Summary of the final regulatory action:

It is prohibited to import, sell, and use pendimethalin as a pesticide

The reasons for the final regulatory action were relevant to: Environment

Summary of known hazards and risks to the environment:

During the evaluation of this pesticide, a number of areas of concern were identified. Pendimethalin is a PBT substance (persistent, bioaccumulating, and toxic) in that DT50 >120 days, BCF >2000, and NOEC for an aquatic organism
(algea) was <0.01 mgt!. The final regulatory action is based on estimated concentrations of the chemical in the environment taking into account the prevailing conditions in Norway.
The risk evaluation concluded that, on the basis of the results of modelled exposure there were unacceptable risks to aquatic organisms. Modelling estimations indicated that application (according to good agriculture practice) of pendimethalin would lead to predicted surface water concentration of 12 ugll, which resulted in very high risk for aqautic organisms
(especially algea where EC50 = 5 ugll).
In addition, pendimethalin was detected in rain water collected in Sweden, which indicates potential for long range transport.

Expected effect of the final regulatory action in relation to the environment:

Complete risk reduction

Date of entry into force of the final regulatory action: 01/12/2006
