The registration of all non-essential uses was suspended by Agriculture Canada in 1990 when health concerns about dinoseb were raised, and the herbicide was designated as restricted class for the few remaining essential uses allowed. In 1994, the use of dinoseb on raspberries in British Columbia was deemed not to be an essential use, and that temporary registration ended, leaving only one restricted class product registered with very limited uses, ie., specific pests on peas and beans in British Columbia, Prince Edward Island, and Nova Scotia. These actions were taken to keep the risks associated with the use of the product within acceptable limits. Use of dinoseb for the control of black nightshade in peas in British Columbia was allowed until December 31, 2001. Dinoseb is no longer registered for use in Canada. The reasons for the final regulatory action were relevant to: Human health Summary of known hazards and risks to human health: Review of relevant data by Health and Welfare Canada (now Health Canada) revealed that dinoseb has teratogenic effects, male reproductive effects, and causes cataract formation in test animals.
