Summary of the final regulatory action:

It is prohibited to production, use and place on the market all plant protection products containing 2,4,5-T according to annual adopted list of active ingredients banned for use in plant protection products under ?lant Protection Act. The chemical is designated as a PIC chemical. (Annex I of the Regulation on the import and export of certain dangerous chemicals on the Bulgarian territory). The import and use of the chemical for research or laboratory purposes in quantities less than 10 kg are allowed.

Summary of known hazards and risks to human health:

2,4,5-T is prohibited to use and place on the market for reasons of adverse effects in humans, because of high toxicity of the 2,3,7,8-TCDD contaminant, which has been found to be carcinogenic and teratogenic. 2,4,5-T is a pesticide classified by WHO as obsolete. Applicators and general public are exposed to potential dangers of the product through inhalation and ingestion. It is a potential water contaminant.

Decrease of hazards and risks to human health.

Summary of known hazards and risks to the environment:

2,4,5-T is phytotoxic for almost all wide leave vegetables especially for cotton, tomatoes, ornamentals, vineyards and fruits trees. The compound is long-persistent and has environmental effects, bioaccumulation potential and forms highly toxic substances upon thermolysis. In general, the long-term environmental impact of 2,4,5-T can be considered low but increases with the level of TCDD impurity. May cause contamination of rivers and streams.
