Chemical name: 2,7:3,6-Dimethanonaphth[2,3-b]oxirene, 3,4,5,6,9,9-hexachloro-1a,2,2a,3,6,6a,7,7a-octahydro-, (1a.alpha.,2.beta.,2a.beta.,3.alpha.,6.alpha.,6a.beta.,7 Final regulatory action has been taken for the category: Pesticide Final regulatory action: The chemical is Banned Use or uses prohibited by the final regulatory action: All formulations and all uses are prohibited. The final regulatory action was based on a risk or hazard evaluation: Yes Summary of the final regulatory action: The manufacture, supply, import and use of Endrin and products which contain Endrin shall be prohibited. Textiles and leather goods, which contain Endrin, may not be imported as commercial goods. The reasons for the final regulatory action were relevant to: Human health and environment Summary of known hazards and risks to human health: Human toxicology: Endrin is responsible for several fatal and non-fatal accidental and suicidal poisonings. The oral dose causing death is estimated to be approx. 10 mg/kg body weight. The single oral dose causing convulsions is estimated to be 0.25-1.0 mg/kg body weight. Death may occur within 2-12 hours, if appropriate treatment is not administered immediately. In cases of non-fatal poisoning, recovery is rapid and complete. Endrin does not accumulate in the human body, and it cannot be detected in samples of adipose tissues in the general population. Endrin is not classifiable as to its carcinogenicity to humans. Expected effect of the final regulatory action in relation to human health: A reduction of exposure to endrin for workers and consumers. Summary of known hazards and risks to the environment: Endrin does not show significant effects on soil microorganisms: concentrations of between 10, 100 or 1000 mg/kg soil had no effect on organic matter decomposition, dinitrification, methanogenesis, sulfate reduction, or carbon dioxide evolution under anaerobic conditions. Endrin is highly toxic to aquatic invertebrates, fish and phytoplankton and to amphibians and to terrestrial animals. Expected effect of the final regulatory action in relation to the environment: A reduction of exposure to Endrin for environmental organisms. Date of entry into force of the final regulatory action: 01/09/1986 |
