Registration was withdrawn and the products containing aldrin were banned for use as a pesticide.

Aldrin and mixtures containing 0.1% or more of aldrin are banned for manufacture, import and use as an industrial chemical. No remaining uses are allowed, except for the use mentioned below.

Use of the chemical for research or laboratory purposes is allowed.

No remaining use is allowed

Summary of the final regulatory action:

Aldrin and mixtures containing 0.1% of aldrin are banned for manufacture, import and use as both industrial and agricultural purposes. No remaining uses are allowed.

The reasons for the final regulatory action were relevant to: Human health

Summary of known hazards and risks to human health:

Aldrin has probable carcinogenic and acute toxic effects on humans. Severe symptoms may result from ingestion or percutaneous absorption. Based on reports of poisonings and laboratory studies, aldrin would be considered in the group of highest toxicity of the organochlorines.

Expected effect of the final regulatory action in relation to human health:

It is expected that the regulatory action has significantly reduced the potential risk of toxic effect on farmers using the chemical for agricultural purposes, workers involved in the manufacture of industrial goods and the public using the goods.

Summary of known hazards and risks to the environment:

Aldrin has risk of acute toxic effects on ecosystems and has high bioaccumulative and persistent effects in food chains and various environmental media.

Expected effect of the final regulatory action in relation to the environment:

It is expected that the regulatory action has significantly reduced the potential risk of bioaccumulative effect and persistence in food chains and various environmental media.

Aldrin and its mixtures were banned for manufacture, use and import except use for an additive for manufacture of industrial goods by MOE's public Notice No 1991-44(9 August 1991). the notice was amended several times and final amended notice took into force on 13 November 2003.
