The use of paraquat dichloride was banned since January 1, 2020. The reasons for the final regulatory action were relevant to: Human health Summary of known hazards and risks to human health: Highly toxic via ingestion, one teaspoonful of paraquat is fatal. Follllowinnng ingestion of very small amounts of the liquid concentrate, pulmonary oedema, cardiac failure, renal failure, liver failure and convulsions caused by central nervous system involvement, can occur. Under these circumstances, death from multiple organ failure may follow within hours or days. There is no antidote for paraquat. Long-term and delayed health effects may also occur including Parkinson's diseases, lung effects and skin cancer.Expected effect of the final regulatory action in relation to human health: Poisoning cases to public citizen, consumers and bystanders can be reduced dramatically.
